Bengali and Bangladeshi groceries
Mach, bhaat, dal and shobji: Bengali cooking needs a lot more than a generic curry powder. Tukwila stocks what you'd find at a bazar in Dhaka, Sylhet or Kolkata, starting with frozen ilish, rui, pabda, koi, tengra and shorputi, plus dried loitta fish and shrimp for shutki bhorta. Fragrant chinigura rice from Danish, Ifad and other brands sits next to the basmati.
The spice shelf carries Radhuni mixes for kacchi biryani, beef and haleem, alongside panch phoron, kalonji and tejpata. For snacking there's Ruchi Bengali muri, Danish jhal chanachur and Pran biscuits; for fish and rice, kasundi and Pran naga chilli pickle. Something sweet? Try khejurer patali gur, rasgulla or chamcham.
Vegetables such as potol, lau, kochu and kochur loti, bitter gourd, lal shak and pui shak arrive in the shop as the season allows. The mustard oil for frying fish is on our shorsher tel page.
Stocking a Bengali kitchen
- Two kinds of rice: basmati or a long grain for everyday bhaat, and chinigura for polao, khichuri and payesh.
- Two oils: mustard oil for fish, bhorta and achar, and a neutral oil for everything else.
- Phoron spices: panch phoron, kalonji and dried red chillies for tempering at the start of cooking.
- Portioning fish: cut whole fish into pieces as soon as it has thawed, keep what you need cold and never refreeze thawed fish.
- For guests: muri, chanachur and a tin of rasgulla make an instant spread.
Most Radhuni products are gathered on our Radhuni masala page. Frozen fish travels in a cool box, packed and sent between Monday and Wednesday.
Frequently asked questions
Do you sell Bangladeshi fish?
Yes, frozen: ilish (hilsa), rui, mrigel, pabda, koi, magur, tengra, shorputi, rupchanda and golda chingri, plus dried fish such as loitta. Frozen fish is sent with GLS in a cool box.
What is kasundi?
Kasundi is a sharp Bengali mustard sauce made from steeped mustard seeds and spices. It's served as a dip with fried fish, vegetable fritters and shingara, or stirred into a bhorta for extra bite.
Which Bengali snacks do you stock?
Favourites include Ruchi and Danish chanachur in hot and mild versions, Bengali muri, Danish jhal muri, Pran BBQ Bombay mix, and Pran biscuits such as coconut, orange and sweet toast, ideal with afternoon cha.
Where can I find khejurer gur?
We stock khejurer patali gur, the solid date-palm jaggery traditionally made in Bangladesh during winter. It has a deep caramel flavour and is lovely in payesh and pitha, or simply eaten with warm roti.
