Lungi, kurta and fotuya for men
Across Bangladesh, West Bengal and South India, the lungi is everyday wear for many men: comfortable, airy and tied in seconds. Tukwila stocks pure cotton lungis in the familiar Grameen check, for example Desi Raj in blue and white, blue and brown or deep blue and violet, and Orbit in browns and blacks. The Orbit lungis measure about 2.5 m (5 haat) and come ready stitched into a tube.
For Friday prayers, family visits or Eid, we also carry long Punjabi kurtas, simply called "panjabi" in Bengali, with Grameen prints in blue, brown and deep brown, plus the short-sleeved fotuya, a relaxed button-neck shirt that works just as well with jeans.
Finish the look with one of our alcohol-free attar perfume oils. Before the festival, take a look at our Eid sweets, and you'll find plenty more from home among our Bengali groceries.
How to tie and care for a lungi
- Step into the stitched lungi and pull it up to your waist, with the seam at the back.
- Take hold of the fabric on both sides, pull it taut to the front and cross one side over the other.
- Roll the top edge outwards two or three times; it stays put without a belt.
As a rule of thumb it should end just above the ankle, and you can fold it up to knee length when you're busy.
Care: wash checked cotton separately for the first few washes at 30–40 °C, as the colours may run. Dry it inside out to keep the pattern bright, and iron cotton kurtas while slightly damp. There's more traditional wear under men, and short fotuyas are also listed in T-shirts.
Frequently asked questions
What is Grameen check?
Grameen check is a checked cotton fabric that is hugely popular in Bangladesh and used for lungis, kurtas and fotuyas. It usually comes in strong colours such as blue, brown and violet in clean, regular squares.
Is the lungi already stitched?
Yes, the Orbit lungis come stitched into a tube and measure about 2.5 m. You simply step in and tie it at the waist. Details for each individual lungi, including fabric and colour, are listed on its product page.
What's the difference between a kurta, a panjabi and a fotuya?
Kurta and panjabi are two names for the same thing: a long tunic shirt with a button placket that can reach below the knee. A fotuya is shorter, often short-sleeved and looser, more of a casual shirt than festive wear.
Is a kurta suitable for Eid?
Absolutely. A long kurta is the classic choice for Eid prayers and family visits. Pair it with white trousers or pyjama, sandals and a touch of attar, and you'll look festive without feeling overdressed or stiff.
