Turkish and Middle Eastern groceries
Pilav, mercimek çorbası and a slice of helva with çay: Turkish cooking has a firm place on our shelves too. From Suntat you'll find bulgur pilavlık for bulgur pilaf, fine cracked wheat for kısır, pilavlık pirinç, tel şehriye for vermicelli rice, red lentils, sumac and nar ekşisi (pomegranate molasses) for salads and marinades.
Tahini comes from Suntat, Durra and Chtoura, ready for hummus, a tahin-pekmez breakfast spread or a sauce for falafel. Helva lovers can pick plain, vanilla, pistachio or cocoa. Round it off with Mevlana tea, Suntat Turkish coffee, chilled ayran, baklava and several kinds of dates.
The savoury side lives in the freezer: Leziz Adana kebap, ızgara köfte, İzmir köfte and tavuk sosis are all on our kebab and köfte page. And to go with them? Arabic flatbread is a staple here, and you'll find it among our flatbreads.
Using bulgur, tahini and friends
- Coarse or fine bulgur? Cook coarse pilavlık like rice: 1 cup bulgur to 2 cups stock, simmer for 15 minutes and rest for 10. Fine bulgur for kısır or köfte only needs soaking in hot water.
- Stir your tahini: the oil separates and rises to the top. Mix the jar well before use and keep it somewhere cool and dark once open.
- Serving helva: sliced at breakfast, with tea, or gently warmed with ice cream.
- Mercimek çorbası: simmer red lentils with onion, carrot and pepper paste for 20 minutes, blend, then finish with lemon and pul biber.
More tins, jars and pickled goods are waiting in our canned food and olives aisle.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between pilavlık and köftelik bulgur?
Pilavlık is coarse bulgur that you cook like rice so it stays fluffy. Köftelik is finely ground and simply soaked, for dishes such as kısır or çiğ köfte. We carry both coarse bulgur and fine cracked wheat.
What is pomegranate molasses used for?
Nar ekşisi is reduced pomegranate juice with a sweet-sour tang. A tablespoon is enough for a salad dressing, kısır or ezme, and it also works well in marinades for grilled chicken and vegetables.
Do you sell Turkish tea and coffee?
Yes, for example Mevlana tea for the çaydanlık and Suntat Turkish coffee. For Turkish coffee you need finely ground coffee, cold water and a cezve, adding sugar at the start if you like it sweet.
Is tahin the same as tahini?
Yes. Tahin is the Turkish name, tahini or tahina the Arabic one, and all refer to a paste of ground sesame. The Suntat, Durra and Chtoura jars all work well for hummus and sauces.
