Besan: pakora or savoury pancakes?
Two different meal ideas from one flour purchase, with vegetables, seasonings and a deliberately short shopping list.
One base, two directions
Gram flour, also called besan, is used in several savoury batters. First decide whether you want small vegetables in a coating or a flat pancake. That choice changes how you cut the vegetables and the consistency you need.
Pakora for a shared evening
Choose vegetables for your pakora recipe and cut reasonably even pieces. Add liquid gradually until the batter clings to them. Cook in small batches and follow a reliable recipe for cooking and handling hot oil. A dip and a drink complete a simple shared table.
A frying-pan alternative
Savoury pancakes use a differently balanced batter. Finely chopped onion, herbs and vegetables can be incorporated according to your recipe. Make one small pancake first so you can check the consistency and seasoning.
Plan heat and accompaniments separately
A milder base with extra chilli offered separately makes sharing easier. A simple vegetable dip means you do not need to buy several prepared sauces. Check ingredients and allergens individually for the flour, spice blends and accompaniments.
What you actually need
One flour product, suitable vegetables, your recipe’s seasonings and the ingredients required for the batter and cooking are a useful starting point. Compare the list with what you already have, then check pack size and unit price in the shop.
