Fresh ginger, garlic paste and dry powders offer different preparation options. Compare ingredients, recipe quantities and after-opening storage before choosing a jar.

Match the form to the task

A recipe may ask for sliced ginger, finely chopped garlic, a smooth paste or dry powder. Each description is part of the method. A jar of paste is convenient for a sauce expecting paste, but it cannot provide the visible slices required by a different dish.

A mixed ginger-garlic paste also fixes the balance between those ingredients. If your recipe needs them in different amounts, separate products give you more control. Read the list on the jar: water, oil, salt or acidity regulators may be present, so the jar's full weight is not necessarily pure ginger or garlic.

Do not invent a universal conversion

A spoon of fresh paste and a spoon of powder are not a guaranteed equivalent. Follow a recipe that names the form you bought, or the manufacturer's substitution instructions where supplied. When adapting a familiar dish, make a smaller batch and record the amount before changing several seasonings together.

If the recipe already contains salt, check whether the paste contributes more before making your usual addition. Product descriptions and recipes can differ between brands and export packs.

Choose a jar around its opening instructions

  • Read whether refrigeration is required after opening.
  • Check any stated use-after-opening period before choosing a large jar.
  • Use a clean utensil and return the product to storage as directed.
  • Do not treat a homemade garlic-in-oil mixture as a shelf-stable replacement for a commercial product.

For a week of cooking, list the dishes that actually require paste and choose the jar accordingly. Browse ginger and garlic pastes and check the preparation panel of your chosen masala mix. Keep the label for the product you receive rather than relying on a remembered instruction from another brand.
