Indian ready meals and instant mixes

Some evenings you want dal and rice without the chopping, tempering and washing up. That's what the vegetarian Ashoka range is for: Delhi dal makhani, dal tadka, Punjabi choley, palak paneer, matar paneer, paneer makhani, dum aloo, aloo matar, saag aloo, bhindi masala, baigan bharta and shahi navratan korma, plus rice dishes such as Bombay biryani and rajma pulao. Heat, add rice or bread, and dinner is on the table.

The other half of the shelf belongs to Gits, whose instant batter mixes take the soaking and grinding out of South Indian breakfasts. Dosa, rava idli, rice idli, uttappam, upma, medu vada and dahi vada are all covered. Gujarati favourites dhokla and khatta dhokla are there too, along with pakora mix for tea time and gulab jamun or jalebi mix for something sweet.

Pair a curry with our frozen parathas, grab a quick bowl from the instant noodles, or go further into dosa territory with our South Indian groceries.

Making ready meals taste homemade

A heat-and-eat curry instantly feels more like home cooking when you add one fresh element just before serving.

  • Pour a quick tadka of ghee, cumin seeds and sliced garlic over dal tadka or dal makhani.
  • Scatter fresh coriander, a squeeze of lemon and finely chopped red onion over choley or rajma.
  • Stir a spoonful of cream or yoghurt into palak paneer.

With Gits mixes, consistency is everything. Dosa batter should pour like double cream, idli batter should be a little thicker, so follow the water and resting times on the pack. Pick up fresh herbs from our coriander, mint and chilli selection and extra seasoning from the masala mixes.

Frequently asked questions

Are Ashoka ready meals vegetarian?

The Ashoka dishes we stock are vegetarian classics based on lentils, beans, vegetables and paneer. It's still worth checking the ingredient list on the pack, particularly if you eat vegan or need to avoid certain allergens.

How do I prepare an Ashoka meal?

Empty the contents into a pan or a microwave-safe bowl and heat, stirring, until piping hot throughout. Exact times are printed on the pack. Serve with basmati rice, chapati or naan for a complete meal.

How do I make dosa with a Gits mix?

Whisk the mix with water into a smooth, pourable batter and let it rest briefly. Pour a ladleful onto a hot, lightly oiled pan, spread it thinly in circles and cook until the underside is golden and crisp.

How long do the ready meals keep?

Sealed pouches and tins keep in the cupboard right up to their best-before date, so they take up no fridge space. Once opened or heated, store any leftovers in the fridge and eat them soon.
