Attar perfume oils

Attar, also written ittar or aatar, is a concentrated perfume oil made without alcohol. In many Muslim households a drop of it is part of getting ready for Friday prayers and Eid, and plenty of people simply prefer its rich, long-lasting scent to a spray for everyday wear.

At Tukwila you'll find a selection of Al-Rehab attars in handy 3 ml and 5 ml bottles: soft musks such as White Musk and Pink Musk, florals like Rose Aatar, Aroosah and Mira, the woody Sandalwood known in Urdu as chandan ka aatar, and Khadlaj, Blanc and Arous. According to the labels, all of them are alcohol-free.

An attar makes a lovely small present, perhaps alongside a new kurta or a box of Eid sweets. For more ideas, browse our gift items.

How to wear attar

  • A little goes a long way: attar is highly concentrated, so one or two drops on the wrist, behind the ear or at the neck last for hours.
  • Dab, don't rub: let the oil settle into the skin on its own and the scent will open up slowly and evenly.
  • Mind your clothes: perfume oil can mark pale fabrics, so test it first somewhere hidden, such as inside a collar.
  • Pick your mood: musk feels soft and clean, rose is floral and festive, sandalwood warm and calm.
  • Storage: keep bottles tightly closed in a cool, dark place, out of direct sunlight.

Getting ready for a celebration? We also stock henna, and during Ramadan you'll find everything for iftar in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Is attar alcohol-free?

Traditional attar is a perfume oil without alcohol, and the Al-Rehab attars we stock are labelled alcohol-free. You'll find the exact details on each product page as well as on the bottle itself.

How long does attar last?

Because attar is an oil, it evaporates more slowly than an alcohol-based spray. Depending on the scent and your skin, it often lasts several hours, and on fabric it can linger even longer. Musk and sandalwood tend to last particularly well.

What is chandan ka aatar?

Chandan is the Urdu and Hindi word for sandalwood, so chandan ka aatar is an attar with a warm, woody and slightly creamy sandalwood scent. We stock it as Al-Rehab's Sandalwood attar in a 3 ml bottle.

Does attar make a good gift?

Yes, a small bottle of attar is a popular present for Eid, after Hajj or Umrah, or when visiting family. If you're unsure of someone's taste, musk and rose scents are a safe and widely loved choice.
