Eid sweets for the festive table
Eid Mubarak! On the morning of Eid, many families start the day with a bowl of semai. For sheer khurma or Bengali lascha semai you'll need roasted vermicelli such as Danish Lascha Semai or Alibaba Roasted Vermicelli, plus milk, sugar, cardamom and dates. Our page on semai and vermicelli explains the method.
When guests drop by or you're visiting relatives, a box of fresh mithai is the classic gift: gulab jamun, kaju katli, motichur laddu, milk cake, chana barfi or a mixed selection. For something that keeps longer, choose boxed Soan Papdi or patisa, or tinned rasgulla.
The festive spread often includes phirni (Radhuni Phirni Mix makes it easy), kheer and borhani, a spiced yoghurt drink you can make with Radhuni Borhani Mix Masala. Fresh sweets are in huge demand in the days before Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha, so it pays to shop a few days ahead.
Preparing and gifting Eid sweets
- Storing fresh mithai: keep gulab jamun, laddu and barfi in the fridge and enjoy them within the first few days. Take them out half an hour before serving.
- Gifts that travel: Soan Papdi and tinned rasgulla are ideal if you're heading to family in another city over Eid.
- Sheer khurma, sorted: chop the nuts and dates the evening before and breakfast on Eid morning takes about 20 minutes.
- Borhani: whisk 500 g yoghurt with 250 ml cold water, 1–2 tsp borhani masala, a little sugar and some mint, then chill well.
Dates for sheer khurma and the festive table are on our dates and khejur page.
Frequently asked questions
Which semai should I use for sheer khurma?
Use fine roasted vermicelli such as Danish Lascha Semai or Alibaba Roasted Vermicelli. They're already toasted, so they cook in milk within minutes while still holding their shape.
How long do fresh Indian sweets keep?
Keep fresh mithai such as gulab jamun, kaju katli or laddu in the fridge and eat it within a few days. Boxed Soan Papdi and tinned rasgulla last much longer while unopened.
What makes a good Eid gift?
A box of mixed mithai is the classic. Longer-lasting options are Soan Papdi, patisa, tinned rasgulla or a pack of good dates, and some people pair sweets with an attar or a lungi.
When should I order before Eid?
Leave yourself a few days. Shelf-stable sweets and semai are shipped with GLS, while chilled items only go out Monday to Wednesday. Fresh mithai is easiest to collect from our Dresden shop.
