Ramadan essentials for iftar and suhoor
When the sun sets, the table should be ready. In many families iftar opens with dates and something cool to drink, so we stock dates such as Palestinian Medjool, Boustan Saudi dates, Khalas and Lulu from Dubai and Iranian dates, plus Rooh Afza and Vimto for mixing.
What comes next depends on where home is. Bengali households set out muri makha with chanachur, onion, green chilli and mustard oil, along with piyaju, beguni and chola. Pakoras and piyaju need gram flour, chola needs chickpeas. In Pakistani and Indian homes samosas, fruit chaat seasoned with Shan fruit chaat masala and dahi bhalla are firm favourites.
Then there's haleem, the Ramadan dish above all others. Radhuni Haleem Mix and Shan Shahi Haleem bring the lentils, grains and spices; you add the meat. Message us on WhatsApp for the fresh halal meat and we'll cut it for you. Finish with jalebi or a bowl of phirni.
Planning your Ramadan shop
- Before the first fast: stock up on dates, gram flour, chickpeas, rice, dal and oil. Order long-life items online a week or two ahead so you're not rushing.
- Keep muri crisp: seal the bag tightly after opening and mix the muri with onion and oil only just before iftar, otherwise it turns soft. See our puffed rice page.
- Batch-cook haleem: make a big pot at the weekend and freeze it in portions.
- Suhoor: frozen parathas, eggs, dal and leftover rice make a quick pre-dawn meal.
Looking ahead to the celebration? Our Eid sweets page covers semai and fresh mithai, which are in high demand in the days before Eid.
Frequently asked questions
Which dates do you sell?
We carry several kinds, including Palestinian Medjool, Boustan Saudi dates, Khalas and Lulu Dubai dates, Iranian dates and Suntat Salambo Nane dates, as well as date paste and date syrup.
How do I cook haleem from a ready mix?
Brown the meat with onions and the spice sachet, add the lentil and grain mix with plenty of water, then simmer gently for two to three hours. Finally, stir hard until it becomes thick and stringy.
What do I need for muri makha?
Puffed rice, chanachur, finely chopped onion, green chilli, coriander, a pinch of salt and a splash of mustard oil. Boiled chickpeas or cucumber make it heartier. Mix everything just before iftar.
Can I order Ramadan groceries online?
