Halal chicken and desi murgi
Whether it's for a weeknight curry, a big pot of biryani or the barbecue, Tukwila stocks halal chicken in several forms: whole birds of around 1–1.1 kg, boneless breast fillet, chicken legs and the firmer desi kokolo chicken that many families simply call desi murgi or "hard chicken". It needs more time in the pot than a supermarket broiler, but it rewards you with a deeper stock and the kind of curry people remember from home.
Fresh meat is cut to order, so you can ask for curry-cut pieces on the bone, larger biryani portions or the skin taken off. Orders are placed by WhatsApp, and you can collect them from our shop on Bautzner Straße 16 in Dresden. We also carry hearts, gizzards and liver, cleaned chicken feet, quail (koel) and whole desi duck.
To round off the meal, pick up a biryani masala, browse our goat and lamb or read more about our halal shop in Dresden.
Getting the most from your chicken
- Pick the right cut: legs stay juicy in a slow curry, fillet suits tikka and quick stir-fries, and a whole bird is ideal for roasting, soup or korma.
- Give desi murgi time: allow 60–90 minutes of gentle simmering for kokolo chicken, longer if you want a rich stock. A pressure cooker does it in roughly 20–25 minutes.
- Marinate properly: yoghurt, ginger-garlic paste, salt and chilli need at least an hour; for tandoori, leave it overnight in the fridge.
- Thaw safely: defrost frozen chicken in the fridge rather than on the worktop, and wash boards and knives in hot water afterwards.
Short on time? Our ready-made curry spice mixes from Shan and MDH take the guesswork out of seasoning.
Frequently asked questions
What is desi kokolo chicken?
Kokolo or desi murgi is a firmer, leaner bird, much like a German Suppenhuhn. It takes far longer to cook than an ordinary broiler, but it gives a full-flavoured stock and a curry with real texture and bite.
How do I order fresh halal chicken?
Send us your order by WhatsApp and tell us how you'd like it prepared, for example curry-cut on the bone or skinless. Fresh meat is cut to order, so you get exactly the pieces you need for your recipe.
Can you send chicken by post?
Fresh chicken is only cut once you've ordered it, so ask in your WhatsApp message whether your chosen cut can be posted. Frozen chicken products such as seekh kebabs or nuggets travel in an insulated box, and a €9.99 cool-box fee applies.
Do you have ready-made chicken products for the freezer?
Yes, for instance Crown chicken seekh kebabs and chicken finger kebabs, Leziz chicken nuggets and schnitzel, plus chicken burgers. They are handy for busy evenings, parties or quick packed lunches for the kids.
