Mithai: fresh Indian sweets
Passed an exam, welcomed a baby, celebrating Eid? Across South Asia, good news is shared with a box of mithai. Bengalis call them mishti, many Pakistanis simply say mithai, and either way the word opens up a colourful world built on milk, sugar, ghee, nuts and gram flour.
Our fresh sweets counter includes motichur laddu made from tiny boondi pearls, syrup-soaked gulab jamun, cashew-based kaju katli, milk cake, bright orange jilebi, peda, chana barfi and khoya barfi made with reduced milk. There's also gajar halwa (carrot halwa), matri and a mixed sweets box for anyone who can't choose. For something that keeps longer, soan papdi, the flaky melt-in-the-mouth classic, makes an easy gift.
If the spongy chhena sweets of Bengal are your weakness, head to rasgulla and chamcham. Planning to roll your own laddu? You'll need good ghee and besan. Everything fresh is in fresh sweets.
Buying, storing and serving mithai
- Keep them cool: fresh sweets made with milk or khoya belong in the fridge and taste their finest in the first few days after purchase.
- Before serving: take barfi and peda out 15–20 minutes ahead so the flavour opens up. Gulab jamun are lovely warmed briefly in the microwave.
- How many? Allow two or three pieces per guest, or fewer at a party with lots of other dishes.
- Plan ahead: demand peaks before Eid, Diwali and the wedding season, so order early.
For a festive spread, set fresh pieces alongside a bowl of semai or creamy kheer. You'll find ideas for the whole day on our Eid sweets page.
Frequently asked questions
How long do fresh Indian sweets keep?
Milk-based sweets such as barfi, peda and milk cake should be kept in the fridge and eaten within a few days. Syrup sweets like gulab jamun last a little longer when chilled. Packaged soan papdi keeps much longer than fresh mithai.
What's the difference between barfi and peda?
Both are based on khoya, milk cooked down until thick. Barfi is pressed into a tray and cut into diamonds or squares, often with nuts or gram flour. Peda is shaped into small round discs and tends to be softer, with a more caramel-like flavour.
Are Indian sweets vegetarian?
Most classic mithai are made from milk, sugar, ghee, nuts and flour, so they're vegetarian but not vegan. Some are decorated with edible silver leaf (vark). If it matters to you, ask in the shop or check the product information.
Can I pick up sweets for a party in Dresden?
Yes, fresh sweets are available over the counter in our Dresden-Neustadt shop (Bautzner Straße 16), open Mon–Sat 10:30–20:00. For larger quantities before Eid or a wedding, it's a good idea to speak to us well in advance.
