Reading multilingual grocery names in a German shop

2 min read · Updated 2026-10-28

A simple grocery shop with rice, lentils and pantry jars

Use translated names to find groceries, then verify the specific product’s ingredients, allergens, quantity and preparation. Similar names do not establish identical contents.

Use names as a search bridge

A household shopping list may say jeera, cumin or Kreuzkümmel; another may say atta or whole-wheat flour. Keep the familiar name and a clear translated description together. Add the form, such as whole, powder, split or roasted, because the translation of the main ingredient alone may lose that detail.

If several candidates appear, compare their actual labels. A brand can sell different recipes or export packs. A familiar logo is not proof that the ingredients match an older packet at home.

Check four parts before purchase

  • Product identity: the complete food name, not only a promotional phrase.
  • Ingredients and allergens: read the list and highlighted allergen information, including any precautionary statement.
  • Quantity: distinguish net contents, piece count and drained weight where provided.
  • Handling: read storage and preparation instructions, including after opening.

For online prepacked food, required information generally needs to be available before purchase, with the date exception described in EU distance-selling guidance. If a detail relevant to your decision is missing or unreadable, ask the shop for it before ordering. A general disclaimer does not supply a missing ingredient list.

Read the delivered pack again

Check the package received, especially if a recipe or label has changed. Keep a photograph of the ingredient panel and full name for your next order. An illustration of a cooked meal is not evidence that all its ingredients come inside the packet.

Do not assign halal, vegan, gluten-free, origin or allergen claims from a product name alone. For ambiguous spice names, use the Indian spice guide and ask for manufacturer identification where needed. Good shopping notes keep the original name, translated identity and preparation form together.
