Fenugreek seeds and kasuri methi: a label guide

A search for methi can bring up seeds, dried leaves, powders and mixtures. Fenugreek seeds and dried fenugreek leaves are distinct cooking ingredients. Manufacturers list them separately; a shared plant name does not make their amounts interchangeable.

Kasuri or kasoori methi commonly identifies dried leaves. For a recipe that asks you to crumble leaves near the end, buy the leaf product. For a recipe that uses whole seeds in a cooked spice stage, look for methi seeds instead. Follow the timing of the actual recipe rather than adding either format at the same point.

Watch for prepared mixtures

Check the ingredient list if a product title is brief. A spice mix mentioning methi may include several ingredients; a powdered seed product is not the same as dried leaf flakes. Match all three details: plant part, physical form and whether it is a single ingredient.

A practical buying plan

Start with the dish you will make this week. Check whether the recipe needs a small quantity of leaves or a measured amount of seeds. Buy a pack that fits that use and your next few planned meals. A large seed bag is poor value if the recipe actually needs leaves.

Label the container clearly after opening and keep the date and batch details. When a recipe is new, measure its stated quantity before adjusting flavour on later attempts.
