Coriander seeds or powder: choosing form and pack size

2 min read · Updated 2026-10-28

Whole coriander seeds and ground coriander

Whole coriander and ground coriander serve different preparation steps. Choose the form first, then compare the amount you can realistically use.

Seeds, powder and fresh leaves are different purchases

A recipe that says coriander may mean seeds, ground spice or fresh leaves. Read the method before searching. Dhania on a spice packet often refers to coriander, but the words whole or powder still matter.

If the recipe asks you to crush seeds, buy whole coriander and check that you have suitable equipment. If it mixes a measured powder into a sauce, a ground product is the direct match. Fresh leaves are a separate ingredient and do not replace a spoonful of seed powder just because the plant name is shared.

Compare pure spice with a mixture

Check the ingredients rather than assuming every packet with coriander on the front contains only coriander. A coriander-containing masala may add salt and several other spices. Its weight and price cannot be compared as though it were a pure-spice refill.

For a first recipe, use the stated form. Where a recipe provides both a whole and ground option, follow that recipe's measurements. Do not count seeds from a photograph or assume every grinder gives the same volume.

A practical cupboard decision

  • Cook with ground coriander every week? Add up your usual use before buying a larger refill.
  • Need whole seeds for one dish? A small pack keeps the experiment manageable.
  • Already have an unlabelled jar? Resolve its identity before adding it to a meal; colour alone is unreliable.

Store the labelled spice away from cooking steam and close it after measuring. A dry spoon keeps moisture out. Keep date and batch information when decanting. See storing spices for a cupboard routine and Indian spice basics for planning a small selection instead of buying every format at once.
