Fennel, anise and ajwain are distinct spices. Compare the complete name, the recipe and any botanical identification before treating similar seeds as substitutes.

Similar shapes do not make the same ingredient

Fennel is often labelled saunf or soonf. Anise and ajwain are separate ingredients, even when a translation or a small product image makes the distinction hard to see. The Spices Board identifies fennel, aniseed and ajowan separately.

Keep the exact name from your recipe. If a family recipe uses a regional name, compare it with a clearly labelled existing pack or ask for clarification before buying. A product described as aniseed should not be silently substituted for fennel simply because both are associated with a sweet aromatic flavour.

Read the format as well as the name

A plain seed packet, a ground spice and a sweetened mouth-freshener mixture are different purchases. If the recipe requires plain fennel seeds, inspect the ingredients for added sugar, coatings or other seeds. A colourful mixed product may be pleasant as its own snack but is not the same recipe ingredient.

For ajwain, preserve that name in the search rather than reducing it to seeds. Avoid relying on loose translations such as lovage seeds without a manufacturer identity that resolves the product.

Build a small, labelled collection

  • Buy the one spice needed for the next dish before adding similar-looking alternatives.
  • Keep the original pack until the storage jar has the complete name.
  • Compare kilogram prices only after confirming the ingredient and format match.
  • Use the amount in a recipe written for the spice you bought; do not assume equal strength.

If your goal is a Bengali seed mixture, read panch phoron for everyday cooking and check that blend's actual ingredients. For cupboard organisation, see spice storage. These are culinary shopping choices, not a basis for medicinal or digestive promises.
