Cumin, nigella and black cumin: check the name before buying

Jeera, kalonji and black cumin can be confusing shopping names. Use the full ingredient description, and a botanical name when supplied, to avoid a mistaken substitution.
Keep three names separate
Ordinary cumin is commonly sold as jeera. Kalonji is a name used for nigella. Black cumin is an ambiguous English shopping term: different suppliers use it for different spices. A dark seed photograph or the word black is not sufficient identification.
If your recipe says shahi jeera, do not silently replace it with kalonji. Look for a clear ingredient declaration or botanical identification from the manufacturer. If the listing does not resolve the name, ask the shop before ordering rather than treating the two packets as equivalent.
Search with a second clue
Begin with the recipe's exact name, then add whole or powder if the recipe specifies it. Remove the brand filter if you get no results. Compare the ingredient panel of the candidate pack, not only the translated title in a search suggestion.
- Cumin whole and cumin powder are different formats of the named spice.
- A blend containing cumin is not a bag of pure cumin.
- A product described only as black cumin needs a clearer identity before substitution.
Buy for the cooking step
A tempering step that calls for whole seeds is different from a sauce mixed with powder. Choose the format the method expects. If adapting, use a recipe that explains the substitution instead of assigning a fixed teaspoon conversion from a photograph.
For a first purchase, keep the labelled packet until you know the ingredient. Write the full name on any storage jar; a jar marked black seeds recreates the same confusion next month. Browse cumin and jeera and the panch phoron guide for related uses without assuming every dark seed belongs in the same blend.
